Comprehensive Hip Fellowship

The American Hip Institute Research Foundation is proud to offer five Comprehensive Hip Fellowship positions annually. This highly specialized fellowship is designed to prepare orthopedic surgeons for focused careers in hip surgery. Fellows benefit from a strong research program within a collaborative learning environment. The fellowship is ideally suited for graduates of sports medicine or adult reconstruction fellowships seeking advanced subspecialty training, though exceptional graduating orthopedic residents are also encouraged to apply.
The fellowship is a one-year program beginning with a two-week orientation starting August 1, featuring:



Surgical Experience
A high-volume privademic practice managing a wide range of sports medicine-related hip conditions, from simple to complex, emphasizing both surgical and rehabilitation approaches. Fellows gain comprehensive clinical and surgical exposure to:
Hip Arthroscopy
- Minimally invasive hip arthroscopy using 3-D preoperative planning and real-time intraoperative navigation
- Labral repair, augmentation, and circumferential reconstruction
- Ligamentum teres reconstruction
- Capsular plication and reconstruction
- Treatment of various forms of hip impingement, including femoroacetabular, subspine, and ischiofemoral
- Endoscopic procedures such as trochanteric bursectomy, IT band release, gluteus medius repair, and proximal hamstring repair
Hip Arthroplasty
- Total hip arthroplasty with Mako robotic assistance
- Direct anterior and posterolateral approach hip arthroplasty
- Birmingham hip resurfacing
Open Hip Preservation & Reconstruction
- Surgical hip dislocation
- Femoral rotational osteotomy
- Peri-acetabular osteotomy
- Full-thickness gluteus medius repair and gluteus maximus transfer

Clinical Training
Fellows master the evaluation and management of the full spectrum of hip pathology, developing skills in:
- Advanced physical examination techniques
- Interpretation of imaging including X-rays, MRI (arthrogram/dGEMRIC), CT scans with 3D reconstruction, and triple-phase bone scans
- Ultrasound-guided large joint injections for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes
- Exposure to cutting-edge regenerative medicine including bone marrow-derived orthobiologics, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and viscosupplementation

Research Opportunities
AHIRF produces over 40 publications annually in major academic journals. Fellows with research interests participate in clinical outcomes studies alongside interns and clinical research fellows, with the opportunity to publish 5-10 papers per year. Fellows also present their work at national and international conferences and gain experience in IRB submissions and grant writing.
