Background:
Gluteus medius (GM) tears cause hip pain predominantly in older adults. Differences in presentation and outcomes between sexes have not been fully characterized.
Methods:
Comparison of clinical presentation and PROs (mHHS, NAHS) in men versus women after GM repair surgery with a minimum 2-year follow-up.
Key Findings:
- Both sexes experience significant postoperative improvements; women may have slightly better functional gains in some metrics.
- Men tend to be older and have a higher incidence of concomitant lumbar spine pathology.
Conclusions:
GM repair is effective in both men and women; however, the presence of lumbar pathology in men should be considered as a factor that may influence recovery and outcomes.
What Does This Mean for Providers?
Evaluate and manage lumbar spine issues in male patients undergoing GM repair, as these comorbidities may impact surgical outcomes. Tailor preoperative counseling and postoperative rehabilitation accordingly to optimize recovery.
