Background

The influence of symptom duration on outcomes after hip arthroscopy for labral tears has been uncertain.

Methods

Prospective study of 680 patients with labral tears and minimum 2-year follow-up, excluding cases with dysplasia, workers’ compensation claims, and prior hip surgeries. The relationship between symptom duration and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) was analyzed.

Key Findings

  • Longer symptom duration significantly predicted worse pain, satisfaction, and functional outcomes post-arthroscopy.
  • Additional negative predictors included increased age, BMI, and trauma history.

Conclusions

Delaying surgical intervention for labral tears may reduce the clinical benefit achieved by hip arthroscopy.

What Does This Mean for Providers?

Providers should weigh the risks of prolonged symptom duration when considering surgery. Early identification and timely surgical referral may optimize patient outcomes after labral repair.
