Background

Revision hip arthroscopy is common when initial surgery fails, but whether outcomes differ if the revision surgeon is different from the index surgeon is unknown.

Methods

Matched patient groups undergoing revision hip arthroscopy by same vs. different surgeons were compared on PROs and conversion to total hip arthroplasty.

Key Findings

  • Both groups had similar and significant improvement in PROs.
  • No significant difference in revision or conversion rates.

Conclusions

Revision hip arthroscopy outcomes are favorable regardless of surgeon continuity.

What Does This Mean for Providers?

Surgeons can reassure patients that good outcomes can be achieved with revision surgery, even if performed by a different surgeon. Continuity of surgeon is not critical for revision success, allowing flexibility in referral and care pathways.
