Background
Femoral version varies across populations and may influence hip pathology. However, normative data in symptomatic hips was limited.
Methods
Review of 1,449 hips with symptomatic pathology; pre-op MRI used to measure femoral version.
Key Findings
- Mean femoral version was 8.4° ± 9.2° (range: -23° to 63°).
- No significant differences based on age, gender, or hip pathology.
- Younger patients showed a trend toward increased femoral retroversion.
Conclusions
Significant variation exists in femoral version among symptomatic hips; retroversion may be more common in younger patients.
What Does This Mean for Providers?
- Assessing femoral version is crucial in the diagnostic workup of symptomatic hips.
- Awareness of normative variation and age-related trends can guide surgical decision-making and help tailor treatment plans, especially in younger patients presenting with retroversion.
- Incorporate femoral version measurements into preoperative planning to optimize outcomes.
