Purpose
To assess 2-year clinical outcomes and return-to-sport rates in competitive athletes undergoing hip arthroscopy with capsular plication for ligamentous laxity and/or borderline dysplasia.
Methods
Prospective evaluation of high school, collegiate, and professional athletes undergoing hip arthroscopy with capsular plication. Functional scores and VAS pain were tracked.
Results
- Significant improvements in all hip-specific outcome scores and pain reduction.
- 85.4% of athletes returned to sport; 82.9% returned to preinjury or higher level.
Conclusions
Capsular plication is an effective surgical approach in hypermobile or dysplastic athletes, offering pain relief and high return-to-sport rates.
What Does This Mean for Providers?
- For athletes with ligamentous laxity or borderline dysplasia, capsular plication should be considered to stabilize the joint and support return to play.
- These results affirm the safety and durability of hip arthroscopy in high-demand patients, provided structural stability is addressed.
- Preoperative counseling should focus on realistic timelines and expected outcomes, especially in contact or pivoting sports.
