DOI: 10.1016/j.arthro.2015.03.042

Purpose:

To compare clinical outcomes and complications after open versus endoscopic repair of gluteus medius and minimus tears.

Methods:

  • Systematic review including 7 studies (127 open repairs, 40 endoscopic).
  • Outcomes assessed: patient-reported scores, strength, pain, satisfaction, complications.

Key Findings:

  • Similar improvements in hip scores, strength, and pain at 1- and 2-year follow-up between groups.
  • Endoscopic repairs frequently addressed concomitant intra-articular pathology.
  • Open repairs had a higher reported complication rate.

What Does This Mean for Providers?

  • Both open and endoscopic repairs are effective for abductor tendon tears.
  • Endoscopic repair may offer fewer complications and allow simultaneous treatment of intra-articular pathology.
  • When feasible, consider endoscopic repair as a minimally invasive alternative.
  • Larger, randomized studies needed to establish definitive superiority.
