Background
Femoral retroversion’s impact on outcomes after hip arthroscopy in elite athletes is understudied.
Methods
- Reviewed elite athletes with femoral retroversion undergoing hip arthroscopy for FAIS (2010-2018).
- Propensity-matched with athletes having normal femoral version.
- Compared preoperative and 2-year postoperative PROs and return-to-sport (RTS) rates.
Key Findings
- Athletes with femoral retroversion showed significant improvements in PROs.
- High rates of MCID and PASS achievement on the Hip Outcome Score-Sport Specific Subscale (HOS-SSS).
- RTS rate was 83.3%, comparable to controls with normal femoral version.
Conclusions
Hip arthroscopy yields favorable outcomes and high RTS rates in elite athletes with femoral retroversion, similar to those without retroversion.
What Does This Mean for Providers
- Femoral retroversion should not be considered a contraindication for hip arthroscopy in elite athletes.
- Expect similar functional gains and RTS likelihood regardless of femoral version status.
- Counsel athletes with retroversion that their prognosis post-arthroscopy is comparable to peers without this anatomical variant.
- Consider individualized surgical planning but do not withhold surgery based solely on femoral retroversion.
