Purpose:
Evaluate whether intraoperative PRP injection improves outcomes after hip arthroscopy for labral tears compared to standard bupivacaine injection.
Methods:
Prospective study of 306 patients; outcomes measured pre-op, 3 months, and 2 years post-op via PRO scores and pain VAS.
Key Findings:
- Both groups improved overall.
- At 2 years, PRP group had slightly higher pain scores and lower modified Harris Hip Scores.
- No difference in other PROs or revision/THA rates.
Conclusion:
Intraoperative PRP did not enhance clinical outcomes and may slightly worsen pain and function scores at 2 years.
What Does This Mean for Providers?
- Routine use of intraoperative PRP during hip arthroscopy for labral tears is not supported by current evidence.
- Consider cost-effectiveness and patient counseling before offering PRP injections.
- Focus on established pain management techniques unless future data suggests otherwise.
