Background:

Gluteus medius (GM) tears often cause hip pain and dysfunction, particularly in patients over 50. This study examines how well active patients older than 50 return to their activities after GM repair surgery.

Methods:

The study followed 87 active patients undergoing either endoscopic or open GM repair. Outcomes were assessed with hip function and pain scores over a 2-year follow-up.

Key Findings:

  • About 68% returned to their pre-surgery activity levels.
  • Significant improvements in pain, function, and satisfaction were reported.
  • Both surgical techniques showed excellent outcomes.

Conclusions:

GM repair surgery is effective for active patients over 50, helping most regain function and reduce pain to return to prior activity levels.

What Does This Mean for Patients:

If you're over 50 with a GM tear, surgery may help you get back to your active lifestyle with less pain and better hip function.

What Does This Mean for Providers:

  • Consider surgical repair for active older patients with symptomatic GM tears.
  • Both open and endoscopic repairs are viable options with good long-term outcomes.
  • Patient counseling should include realistic expectations about return to activity (~68%).
