Robotic-Arm Assisted Total Hip Arthroplasty Results in Smaller Acetabular Cup Size in Relation to the Femoral Head Size: A Matched-Pair Controlled Study

Background

Robotic-assisted THA (RTHA) offers precise component placement. This study compares acetabular cup sizing relative to femoral head size in RTHA vs conventional THA (CTHA) to evaluate bone preservation.

Methods

57 matched pairs undergoing THA for primary OA. Patients were matched for age, sex, BMI, surgical approach, and femoral head size. The relative cup size was used to assess acetabular bone resection.

Key Findings

  • Cup size relative to femoral head was significantly smaller in the RTHA group (p < 0.02).
  • No differences in absolute cup size or patient demographics.
  • Suggests improved bone preservation in RTHA.

Conclusions

RTHA may better preserve acetabular bone stock, which could benefit long-term implant survival and future revision options.
