DOI: 10.1097/00005131-200605000-00010

Purpose

To describe and validate a new two-step closed reduction technique for inferior glenohumeral dislocations (luxatio erecta).

Methods

Presentation of two clinical cases where the inferior dislocation was first converted to anterior, then reduced into the glenoid fossa with minimal analgesia. Post-reduction neurovascular status was assessed.

Key Findings

  • Successful closed reduction without sedation or surgery in both cases.
  • Neurovascular integrity preserved post-reduction.
  • Technique is simple, reproducible, and minimally invasive.

Conclusion

The two-step maneuver offers a reliable and safe closed reduction method for inferior shoulder dislocations.

What Does This Mean for Providers?

In cases of inferior glenohumeral dislocation, apply the two-step maneuver to avoid surgical intervention and reduce sedation risks, while ensuring neurovascular safety.
